Popular Linux distributions
Ubuntu
Ubuntu is very complete, designed with home users in mind. Ubuntu also maintains specialized builds for servers (Ubuntu Server), netbooks (UNR), and mobile internet decives (MID).
Kubuntu
An Ubuntu derivative that uses the K Desktop Environment.
While Ubuntu is designed with home users in mind, it is just as configurable and expandable as any other distribution. We use it because it's easy to get up and running, quickly! It has a very complete desktop environment. All Linux distributions work the same at the core, the main differences are the initial look & feel, and the included packages.
Red Hat
Designed for medium-sized businesses to large enterprises.
Fedora
A community developed and supported distribution based on Red Hat.
Gentoo
This one is mainly for advanced users and beginners who want to jump in head first and learn the ins and outs of Linux. It requires a lot of command-line configuration to use at all.
CentOS
CentOS is a community maintained, free distribution based on RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux). It is very popular for it's "out-of-box" security and virtualization ability, as well as it's native support for software designed to work with RHEL. It uses the Red Hat Package Manager (RPM) for maintenance of software packages.
